How Schools Amazing Race works
Our School Amazing Race takes all the best bits of the hit TV show without ever having to leave the country! The perfect way to bond students before a big year ahead, celebrate the end of their studies or we can even incorporate your own objectives & learnings from the curriculum into the game.
The game begins with an entertaining Opening Ceremony and explanation hosted by one of our awesome professional actors who have a background in youth arts & entertainment. This epic adventure will see each team locate checkpoints by following a map and solving cryptic clues.
At each checkpoint they need to complete a challenge, all of which have been designed to encourage teamwork and highlight the importance of leadership, communication, delegation, time management and goal setting.
More than just looking at plaques and writing down answers, our checkpoint challenges are interactive and hands-on and will have teams complete eating competitions, constructions tasks, creative photo bonuses, sealed envelope challenges, and public interaction tasks.
The course takes on the format of a choose-your-own-adventure game, so that each team is required to plan and strategise the best order to complete the tasks ahead. They’ll need to work together and keep an eye on the time to ensure they finish all their mandatory tasks, and as many optional bonus challenges as possible before time runs out! Younger students may require a teacher in each team, but older students can participate without supervision.
At the final checkpoint teams check-in all their challenges with our race hosts who keep the scores a secret until the big reveal during the Closing Ceremony.
The winning team is not based on crossing the finish line first; this is a lesson in the importance of attention to detail and the rewards you reap by going above and beyond! Our hosts reveal the best performing teams in certain challenges, further adding to the suspense. Finally, the winning team is announced and awarded with their medals!

FAQs
Are the students supervised by Great Race staff?
There are Great Race hosts at the start location who then move to two of the checkpoints, and then move to the finish line. Teams are not supervised between checkpoint locations (each one usually a 5-15min walk apart), and they'll need to find their own way by following clues and using a map. They'll also need to self manage their time to ensure they can complete all challenges and visit all locations before time runs out. This is where the growth and leadership outcomes are fostered.
For junior groups we require you to have a parent or teacher in each team to ensure students are supervised at all times. Duty of care remains with the school at all times.
Will there be time for students to eat lunch during the game?
No, it is a race after all, and the clock is ticking from the moment the race starts until teams cross the finish line. There is no time to stop for food during the game, so please choose a start time that allows you enough time to have lunch after the game, or start the game after lunch.
Depending on your route, there may not be food options near the finish line so it's best to ask students to bring their own food or check with us about what is nearby.
Will students need a phone?
Each team will need at least one fully charged phone that can be used for taking photos and videos for challenges, and for using maps to help find their way. This could be a parent or teacher's, or a students phone. We ask that the school retains contact details for each team in the event we need to contact a team during the game.
Are the winners based on who crosses the finish line first?
The winners are the team with the most points, not necessarily the team that finishes first. Teams will all have an identical set of challenges and the same time frame to complete the game, but it's how each team meets that challenge that will determine if they're the winners. Time management, delegation, team work, and creativity are all required to win, not speed.
How to plan an Amazing Race around our school
First choose a start location where everyone can gather for the briefing. Then each team will need a list of pre-organised checkpoints to locate around the school campus. At each location they'll need to complete a challenge such as construction challenges, codebreakers, cryptic puzzles, creative photo bonuses, and trivia questions. Once they've completed all challenges, or when time runs out, everyone will meet back at the finish location and the race hosts will need to tally each team's score. Finish the event with an epic and exciting closing ceremony where the winners are announced and awarded with their prizes.
We can create and facilitate a custom Amazing Race around your school grounds, and even incorporate your curriculum or learning outcomes. We'll design the game, host the event, and handle all the logistics.
Depending on your school, the Amazing Race may be best played outside of school hours so we don't disturb other classes. Or you may be interested in our School Survivor activity which can be played on the oval at any time of day.
Do you provide prizes?
Yes! Everyone on the winning team will receive their own proper, break-your-teeth medal that they can keep forever.
Why brands, teams, friends, and family can’t get enough of Great Race!
Just wanted to personally thank you for the session you and your team provided at the U@UNSW conference. It really met all our boxes and aligned with my debrief. Its especially refreshing to partner with an organisation who just get it without the need for micro-management. So… THANK YOU. I look forward to working with you guys again in the future.

Please extend my thanks to Josh and Brett and the crew that ran our excursion last week. It was a great day and everyone who participated, students and teachers continue to rave it was great fun! Accessible, comprehensive, well times and professionally ran. Words can not really do justice to how great it was. Given our rapture with the program we will be making this an annual event.

I would love to convey how fantastic the day was, Brett and staff provided perfect activities/challenges and a level of energy which started the day with a bang. We took with us to Southbank 150 students with very cynical attitudes and what the experience helped generate is a mountain of new friendships, faith and trust in each other and a spirit of confidence and social cohesion I have been trying to achieve all year.
